The number of Chinese visitors to New Zealand rose by 31.2 percent to 210,240 in the year ended March, offsetting decreases in visitors from other major markets, the New Zealand government statistics agency announced Friday.
The introduction of new air services contributed to the increase in Chinese numbers, which coincided with fall of 0.3 percent in total overseas visitor numbers to just over 2.6 million, according to Statistics New Zealand.
The rise in the number of Chinese visitors contributed significantly to a rise of 2.3 percent in the total tourism spending of 23.9 billion NZ dollars (19.85 billion U.S. dollars) in the March year.
"There's been strong growth in Chinese visitors, contributing to an increase in international expenditure. This reflects both the increasing value of the Chinese market and the ongoing change in the composition of our traditional visitor markets," satellites account manager Peter Gardiner said in a statement.
Tourism generated a direct contribution to GDP of 7.3 billion NZ dollars, or 3.7 percent of New Zealand's GDP, and the tourism industry accounted for 110,800 full-time equivalent jobs, or 5.7 percent of total employment.
