BEIJING, April 28 -- Wartime archives not only expose Japanese brutality in China during WWII but also the vile intent of those who have denied the facts for decades, said the People's Daily.

The People's Daily, flagship newspaper of the Communist Party of China, carried a commentary on Monday following the release of 89 wartime documents detailing atrocities perpetrated by Japanese troops in China , from the archives of Jilin Province in northeast China.

These documents are some of nearly 100,000 files left behind by fleeing Japanese troops as the war drew to a close. They contain details of organized programs for abduction and transportation of Chinese women to be forced into sexual slavery, the so-called "comfort women".

They included more facts about gruesome killings in Nanjing in December 1937 and testify to events in the notorious Unit 731 where Japanese doctors conducted bacterial experiments on Chinese prisoners.

The documents are undeniable proof of historical issues that Japan's right-wing politicians have given their every effort to deny, read the article. By distorting and covering up historical details, Japan's right-wing forces "whitewashed an invasion into a liberation and made war criminals into heroes."

These politicians have deprived generations of Japanese people the chance to know the truth. They persistently plunge the country into diplomatic dilemmas, give grievous offence to the victims and jeopardize Asia's integration, the article argued. Nearly 70 years after the end of WWII, many issues, including reparations, have not been fully settled. China and Japan are nowhere near to a consensus on history nor to reconciliation.

There are many more documents yet to be published and they will continue to lay bare the absurdity of continuing to deny the nature of the invasion.

"Without the reflection on the past, there will be no good in the future. Those who did wrong in the past should stop playing with fire now and avoid leading their country further down dangerous road."
