KEP, Cambodia, Jan. 25 -- The Cambodian Red Cross on Saturday continued providing China-donated relief items to some 1, 820 families who are flood victims, HIV/AIDS patients and elderly and disabled people.

Cambodian Red Cross' President Bun Rany, the wife of Prime Minister Hun Sen and Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Bu Jianguo jointly handed over the relief items including rice, noodles, clothes, mosquito nets, blankets and cash gift to those vulnerable families.

The items are part of the 1 million U.S. dollars donation from the Chinese government to Cambodia in October for people who have faced hardships due to severe flooding last year.

Addressing the ceremony, Bun Rany expressed gratitude to the government and people of China for their humanitarian assistance to Cambodia in all difficult time.

"China is Cambodia's elder brother," she said. "The people of Cambodia will have never forgotten China's help in difficulties."

Bun Rany said the 1 million U.S. dollars donation from China was used to buy 2,000 tonnes of milled rice for vulnerable people in the country.

So far, the Cambodian Red Cross has distributed about 446 tonnes of the China-donated rice to 17,860 families in nine provinces and the distribution operations are still going on.

Bu said China and Cambodia are good friends, neighbors, brothers and partners, and the two countries always help each other in difficult time.

She said China would continue helping Cambodia in all-round cooperation to promote its social and economic development and poverty reduction activities.

Cambodia had been hit by Mekong River flooding between August and October last year, which killed 168 people and affected about 1.8 million others, according to the National Committee for Disaster Management.

The flood cost the country nearly 1 billion U.S. dollars due to the damage to road infrastructure and agricultural crops, particularly rice paddy.
