BEIJING, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- China here on Wednesday called for stability and order in Thailand, after the country declared a state of emergency in its capital and surrounding areas.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang told a daily press briefing, "China calls on relevant parties in Thailand to solve issues through talks, and for the country to restore stability and order as soon as possible."

As a close neighbor of Thailand, China is concerned about the situation in the country, Qin said.

The Thai caretaker government on Tuesday invoked emergency decree in the capital and nearby areas, effective from Wednesday for 60 days.

According to caretaker Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung, the government had to invoke a state of emergency because anti-government protests were leading to an increase violence.

The decree gives the government powers to deal with the unrest.
