China is very concerned about the current tension on the Korean peninsula. The stance of the Chinese government on the Korean Peninsula is consistent and clear.

There have been days since the dramatic escalation of the tense situation on the Korean Peninsula. At present, there is no sign of easing, and relevant sides are exchanging harsh words. Using the word "dangerous" to describe this situation is not too much. Both historical experience and knowledge of reality is reminding people that a string stretched at high intensity for too long always leads to an accident. Whether it is intentional or misfires, a trivial matter is likely to make the situation come to a standstill, or even get completely out of control.

Maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula needs to provide temporary and permanent solutions to the problems, and this requires a good environment. Once the situation spins out of control, relevant sides will only go farther and farther down the path of confrontation and conflict, and constructive propositions will lose the opportunity to play a role. In this sense, to cool down the Korean Peninsula issue and take effective action to promote easing the situation is the most urgent thing, and is also where common interests of all sides lies.

To prevent further deterioration of the situation, two things must be done.

First, issue a stern warning and emphasize the basic rationality. Pick something to cause trouble on the peninsula will damage the interests of all parties, and can only result in sowing the wind and reaping the whirlwind. The more critical the moment is, the more we need to keep calm and sober. Willful acts would really stir up trouble and end up not able to afford the loss.

Secondly, not to take pleasure in other people's misfortune or add fuel to the flames. Once the situation on the Korean Peninsula is completely out of control, and turns into a disastrous situation, any party is impossible to be out of it, and there will not be opportunity to "seize the initiative". All parties need to keep calm and restraint, and promote easing the situation, which is responsible for peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, and is also responsible for their own interests.

The Korean Peninsula is a close neighbor of China. China is seriously concerned about the current state of tension on the Korean Peninsula. China opposes provocative words and deeds of any party in the region, and will not allow troublemaking at the doorsteps of China. This stance is serious and firm.

The stance of the Chinese government on the Korean Peninsula is consistent and clear. China firmly safeguards peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, persists in advancing the process of denuclearization on the peninsula, advocates to deal with and solve problems in a peaceful manner through dialogue and consultation. No matter how the situation changes, China will adhere to this. The reason is very simple: There is no other way to go to prevent the deterioration of the security situation, as well as to achieve long-term peace and stability on the peninsula.

It is in the common interests of all relevant sides to properly handle the Korean nuclear issue, and it is also the common responsibility for all. China is willing to make concerted efforts with all sides to continue advancing the process of the Six-Party Talks and play a constructive role for realizing goals set in the Sept. 19 Joint Statement in a comprehensive and balanced manner.

Sept. 19 Joint Statement was signed on Sept. 19, 2005, in which the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) promised to abandon all nuclear weapons and existing nuclear programs.

The Korean Peninsula cannot afford such a vicious cycle. We need to effectively promote easing the situation on the Peninsula without delay.
