China's top legislature on Thursday launched inspections on how the Law on the Protection of Minors is being implemented.

Six inspection teams, organized by the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), will be sent to provincial regions in Jilin, Jiangxi, Shandong, Henan, Chongqing and Gansu in April and May, according to a meeting of the inspection work group.

The inspections are aimed at strengthening law enforcement, enhancing society's legal awareness and providing a sound environment for minors.

Inspections will focus on the protection of minors' rights, punishments for abduction and trafficking, maltreatment, abandonment, sexual assault and other crimes. The protection of minors during judicial procedures including investigations, prosecutions, trials and executions will also be inspected, according to the meeting.

Local legislatures of other provinces and regions were also ordered to check enforcement of the law.

Assessing the implementation of laws is an important way for the top legislature to exercise supervision.

The Law on the Protection of Minors was adopted by the NPC Standing Committee in 1991 and amended in 2006 and 2012. This will be the third inspection tour, following ones in 2003 and 2008.
