NANNING, Feb. 17-- A former policeman was sentenced to death on Monday for shooting and killing a pregnant woman and injuring her husband at a restaurant in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
Guigang Intermediate People's Court sentenced Hu Ping to death for intentional homicide and ordered him to pay compensation of 73,324 yuan (12,091 U.S. dollars) to the victims' family.
An investigation by the local public security bureau showed Hu was drunk when he shot the couple, who ran a rice noodle restaurant, on Oct. 28, 2013. The husband Cai Shiyong sustained minor injuries to his right shoulder, but his wife Wu Ying and her unborn child died after being shot twice by Hu.
Guigang Intermediate People's Court heard the case publicly on Feb. 13.
In his defense, Hu said the victim's husband had tried to grab his pistol before he pulled the trigger. However several witnesses testified that Cai hadn't moved for the gun until after his wife was shot.
A physical examination report by the Fifth People's Hospital of Nanning showed that Hu was drunk but in control of his faculties when the shooting occurred.
