Historical building to be moved 38 meters

A historical building built in the 1930s in Yangpu district will be moved 38 meters from its original location to make room for an office building, local media reported.

The building, which stands at the interaction of Tongbei and Jining roads, was built in 1935 to serve as a warehouse for a British beverage company, Aquarius Company. The company was later taken over by the local government, according to a report in the Youth Daily.

In 1999, the Shanghai Housing and Land Resources Bureau declared the building a Heritage Architecture building, said Shen Xiongfeng, director of the Yangpu District Cultural Heritage Bureau.

With a footprint of 1,321 square meters, the six-story structure will be the biggest building that has ever been moved in Shanghai, according to the report.

An office building will be built on its current location, said a vice manager surnamed Zhang from Shanghai Guanglin Property Management Co Ltd, which currently manages the historical building.

The company has been preparing the building for the move since April. It will take 20 days to move the building to its new location. The project will begin on November 1.

Workers will first move the building 5.388 meters west and then 33.258 meters north, said Zheng Huaqi, manager of Shanghai Xianwei Civil Engineering Co Ltd, the company charged with moving the building. After the building arrives at its new location, workers will turn it 1 degree counter-clockwise to match its new pillars.

Workers will use concrete frames running crosswise under the building to prevent its pillars from moving. They will employ 324 hydraulic jacks to lift the building. Another 12 to 16 computer-controlled hydraulic jacks will push the building along rails laid during preparation.

Shanghai has a history of moving historical buildings to accommodate construction projects. In 2003, the Shanghai Concert Hall, which was built near People's Square, was moved 66.4 meters due to the construction of metro Line 8, the Xinhua News Agency reported.

In 2010, a historical building on Weihai Road was moved 57 meters to make room for a commercial development, according to a report on the news website xinmin.cn.
