Accidents caused by special equipment, such as elevators and boilers, killed 12 people and injured another 21 in July, according to official data issued on Wednesday.
The death toll was 14 less than the same period of last year, Chen Xitong, spokesman for the General Office of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ), said at a news conference.
Seventeen accidents relating to special equipment were reported in July, down 22.7 percent year on year, Chen said.
He attributed the accidents to a lack of safety awareness and operations against rules.
Chen said AQSIQ has asked local authorities to strengthen checks of special equipment, including elevators and cable cars, to ensure public safety.
