China's meteorological authorities on Wednesday issued an orange warning for Typhoon Trami.

Trami, the 12th tropical storm to hit China this year, intensified to typhoon status at 10 p.m. on Tuesday. It is expected to make landfall in southeastern China's Fujian Province on Wednesday night, said the National Meteorological Center (NMC).

The typhoon will bring torrential rains to the eastern part of Guangdong Province, most of Fujian, the central and southern part of Zhejiang Province and Taiwan, with precipitation of up to 180 mm in some areas, the center said.

After making landfall, Trami is expected to move northwest at a speed of 30 kilometers per hour and then gradually weaken.

The center called on local authorities to step up preparation for any contingency, suspend mass gatherings and outdoor activities, and ask local fishing vessels and other boats to return to port.

China uses a four-tier, color-coded weather warning system, with red representing the most severe weather, followed by orange, yellow and blue.
