BEIJING, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- Ling Chen, a popular science-fiction writer, is busy choosing dresses for a costume party set for Friday, or Doomsday according to the Mayan calendar.

She will gather with more than 200 revellers, many of whom are sci-fi writers and fans and therefore well used to such fanciful apocalyptic scenarios. The group is taking the occasion far from seriously. They are intending to testify to the absurdity of the prophecy by enjoying entertainment in a club in downtown Beijing until dawn on Saturday.
