BEIJING, November 19 -- Fang Fenghui, member of the Central Military Commission (CMC) of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and chief of general staff of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA), held talks with Tom Middendorp, the visiting chief of the Defense Forces of the Netherlands, on the afternoon of November 18, 2013 in Beijing.
Fang Fenghui said that China and the Netherlands enjoy time-honored friendship. The bilateral relations have made great strides since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Over the years, the relations between the two militaries have been deepened and maintained a good momentum of development, as evidenced by pragmatic exchanges and cooperation in such fields as reciprocal visits of delegations and groups, personnel training, logistics and mapping. The Chinese side attaches importance to developing its friendly relations with the military of the Netherlands, and is willing to work together with the Netherlands side to strengthen personnel contacts at all levels and deepen exchanges and cooperation in all fields, so as to push forward the constant development of the military-to-military relations in a more pragmatic way.
Middendorp said that the Netherlands and China share time-honored friendship and enjoy close economic and trade relations. The Netherlands side is willing to enhance mutual understanding with the Chinese side, and strengthen pragmatic exchanges and cooperation in such fields as anti-piracy operation and international peacekeeping operation, so as to constantly improve the relations between the two militaries.
The two sides also talked in depth about the security situation in the Asia-Pacific region and other issues.
Before the talks, Fang Fenghui held a welcome ceremony for Middendorp and accompanied him to review the guard of honor of the three services of the PLA.
