HONG KONG, July 16 (ChinaMil) -- The opening ceremony of the annual "Hong Kong Teenager Military Summer Camp" was held at the San Wai Barracks of the Hong Kong Garrison of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) on the morning of July 15, 2013. A total of 260 students from 143 middle schools attended the camp.
According to the briefing by the Hong Kong Garrison, it was required for each candidate student to be selected from intense competition and strict selection. In answer to the enthusiastic response from students, the Garrison has gradually increased the quota each year. The additional 20 candidates this year make a total of 260.
The guard of honor of the PLA Hong Kong Garrison held the flag-raising ceremony at 10:30 on that day and officially kicked off the summer camp. Yue Shixin, political commissar of the PLA Hong Kong Garrison, and Dongzhao Hongping, sponsor of the Hong Kong Teenager Military Summer Camp, attended and addressed the ceremony.
According to Dongzhao Hongping, there have been 1,500-plus Hong Kong teenagers participating in the summer camp during the course of its 9 years. Through the training, these teenagers have enhanced their national awareness. It is hoped that people from various sectors of the community will continue to care about and support this teenager-friendly business.
The military summer camp this year started on July 15 and will end on 28 for graduation. It will mainly include military and discipline training, special lectures, artistic and athletic activities, and so on.
Yang Jiahui, valedictorian of the camp last year, recalled that after getting along day and night with the soldiers for half a month, she deeply experienced and understood the soldier's spirit of hard working and fearlessness. Through the activities, her understanding and knowledge of the mother country and the military was also enhanced. She also gave words of advice to the students who are about to start the summer camp: "Be prepared to commit to this different form of learning and enjoy the different life during these 15 days."
The "Hong Kong Teenager Military Summer Camp" is jointly organized by the PLA Hong Kong Garrison, the Department of Education of the Hong Kong Special administrative Region (SAR), the "Hong Kong Military-civilian Event Preparatory Committee", and the Hong Kong "Moral Concern Group". This form of "military training" has already become a memorable summer life experience for some Hong Kong teenagers and enhanced the communication and exchanges between the officers and men of the Hong Kong Garrison and the teenagers of Hong Kong. It has also received high praise from various sectors of the society.
