Fan Changlong meets with Dr. Henry Kissinger

BEIJING, April 23, (ChinaMil) -- Fan Changlong, vice chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), met with Dr. Henry Kissinger, the visiting former secretary of state of the United States, and his party on the morning of April 22, 2013 in Beijing.

Fan Changlong said that as a pioneer of the China-U.S. relations and old friend of the Chinese people, Dr. Kissinger has been unswervingly pushing forward the development of the bilateral relations for decades. Currently, the development of the relations is at a new important juncture.

President Xi Jinping and President Barack Obama have reached an important consensus on establishing a new-type relationship between the two great powers and clarified the strategic orientation and the development direction of the bilateral relations.

With a view to the new situation, the two countries and the two militaries should continue to maintain a good momentum of cooperation, address contradictory issues squarely, strive to manage and control differences, enhance mutual strategic trust and jointly meet challenges, so as to push forward healthy and stable development of the relations between the two countries and the two militaries.

Kissinger expressed his sympathy and solicitude for the violent earthquake in Lushan county of southwest China's Sichuan province. He said that the visit made him feel that the Chinese military is more friendly and open, showing that China and the U.S. are partners instead of opponents. The two countries should build up an effective mechanism for communication and consultation at the strategic level and enrich the measures for establishing the new-type relationship between the two great powers. Kissinger himself will continue to devote himself to the development of the friendly relations between the two countries.

Qi Jianguo, deputy chief of general staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) and chairman of the China Institute for International Strategic Studies (CIISS), was present at the meeting.
