A 1000-year old temple hall in China is going to be repaired. It's the oldest surviving wooden structure at Baoguo Temple, a Buddhist temple located in eastern China’s Ningbo city in Zhejiang Province.
The main hall of Baoguo Temple was built one thousand years ago, and now it’s counting down to having major repairs.
Some of the wooden columns have become rotten. And the hall has shifted slightly.
The Baoguo Temple Museum and China’s Southeast University are going to conduct a joint examination of the hall, collecting data on erosion and its overall condition.
"We want to keep the the temple as original as it can be, but we want to keep it from any damage it may experience from the weather and certain kinds of fungi that destroy the wood," said prof. Guo Daiheng from School of Architecture, Tsinghua Uni.
Not a single iron nail was used in the construction. And its choice of location, the design and the construction material have kept insects, birds, and even dust from getting inside.
The hall resides in the Baoguo Temple which was built earlier than 880 AD.
The temple also houses several structures built in the Tang, Ming and Qing Dynasty, representing superb craftsmanship and artistic values of ancient China.
Along with the Forbidden City and the Mogao Grottoes at Dunhuang, it was one of the first sites enlisted as China’s national cultural heritage.
