The 66th annual Cannes Film Festival has gotten underway, with the glamorous premiere of Baz Luhrmann’s "The Great Gatsby".
At the opening ceremony, all eyes were on Leonardo DiCaprio, who stars in the adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s famous 1925 novel. DiCaprio was joined on the red carpet by his "Gatsby" co-stars, while Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan declared the festival officially open.
One of Hollywood’s most accomplished directors, Steven Spielberg, is heading the international jury panel this year. He and eight other members, including Nicole Kidman and Ang Lee, will decide who wins the prestigious Palme d’Or.
There are 20 films competing for the prize, including Chinese director Jia Zhangke’s "A Touch of Sin". It’s the first mainland Chinese entry to compete for the Palme d’Or in three years. A total of three Chinese language films will be screened at the festival.
