The Cathy Theatre, one of the few historic 1930s Art Deco style cinemas that is still open in Shanghai, is seen in the top photo taken in 2010 and above, covered up in scaffolding yesterday. The cinema, at the intersection of Huaihai Road M and Maoming Road, is undergoing a major renovation. The theater, designed by Czech architect C. H. Gonda, opened on January 1, 1932. It holds many sweet memories of several generations of Shanghai people. The renovation will strictly follow the original design and maintain its style, officials said. The theater, with three screens, will reopen in early June. Its last renovation was a decade ago.
