One of Europe’s top helmsman is stepping down. After eight years as, essentially, firefighter-in-chief of the debt crisis, Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker will preside over his last meeting as chair of the Eurogroup on Monday.

The first gathering of eurozone leaders of the year will be dominated by deciding on Juncker’s successor, likely to be Dutch Finance Minister, Jeroen Dijsselbloem. French Finance Minister, Pierre Moscovici, says he hopes his Dutch counterpart would promote Europe with as much commitment as Jean-Claude Juncker did.

Meanwhile, ministers from the 17 eurozone states are also meant to tackle some of the thornier eurozone issues, including which banks could be given direct aid from the bloc’s bailout fund. Some analysts are concerned that it would set off a divisive debate, including doubts about whether such as step should be taken.
