LONDON, May 6 -- British Foreign Secretary William Hague on Tuesday condemned the kidnapping of school girls in Nigeria, urging the Nigerian authorities to take actions to save the abducted girls.

About 200 girls from Chibok community in northeastern Nigeria's Borno State were abducted in April. On Monday, militant group Boko Haram claimed responsibility for the abduction and threatened to sell the girls.

"Using girls as the spoils of war and the spoils of terrorism is disgusting and immoral," Hague said in a statement, adding that everybody across the world "should not give any support for such a vile organization."

He said Britain is offering assistance but the primary responsibility will rest with the Nigerians, calling on the Nigerians to "do what is necessary to reunite these girls with their families."

The foreign secretary said he will host a global summit in London in June to help countries including Nigeria "improve the way they tackle the consequences of sexual violence in conflict and make sure that those responsible are called to justice."

"It is another example of why we have set up the Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative," he noted, adding that Britain recently persuaded Nigeria to join that campaign.

Nigeria, Africa's most populous country, is grappling with security challenges arising from the insurgency of Boko Haram, a sect which seeks to enshrine the Islamic Sharia law in the constitution.
