BANGKOK, Dec. 21 -- Thailand's major opposition Democrat Party on Saturday decided to boycott the upcoming general election slated for Feb.2, 2014.

The party will not filed any candidates in the election and insists the election be postponed until a political reform is carried out, party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva said.

The Election Commission (EC) on Friday reaffirmed the election would not be delayed and candidate registration would start on Monday as planned.

The registration venue will be well protected by the police, EC member Somchai Srisuthiyakorn said after a meeting with Yingluck.

The EC had earlier proposed the caretaker government and protesters reconsider the election date to prevent possible escalation of unrest and dispute over election results.

Caretaker Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Surapong Towichakchaikul on Saturday called on Thais, including protesters, to exercise their voting rights in the election.

Yingluck has already submitted her application to the Pheu Thai Party to seek nomination as a party-list candidate, according to party spokesman Prompong Nopparit.
