Milan, November 26 - Lady Gaga has been officially confirmed as the new face of Versace for the Italian fashion house's Spring-Summer 2014 campaign.
In a skilfully orchestrated drip-feed media campaign, photographer Mert Alas - part of the duo with Marcus Piggott who shot the campaign in London - posted on Instagram a teaser shot of the campaign over the weekend before the fashion house on Monday confirmed the news that the pop star would be the new face of SS 2014.
"I am honoured that my friend Lady Gaga is the face of our new Versace campaign", the house's creative director Donatella Versace said in a statement.
"I wanted to capture her true beauty and spirit in images that are elegant and alluring," added Versace, recalling that the collaboration with the American singer started with the Edge of Glory video released in 2011 in which she wore Versace.
"She is like family to me, the embodiment of the Versace DNA".
The singer's latest Artpop album - her third, full-length studio album of new songs - includes a new track 'Donatella' dedicated to Donatella Versace.
Lady Gaga, born Stefani Germanotta, has piled on a non-stop fashion show throughout her career and a public image appealing to nonconformist 'little monsters', as the pop star has named her fans.
The star's stage shows have built a fashion-forward patina on her sexy and disruptive songs.
The artist and Versace's fashion director dressed and wore their hair in a look-alike style during Milan fashion week appearances in September.
At the weekend's American Music Awards, the singer wore a Versace number very similar to one featured in the campaign, accessorizing in pure Gaga-style with an animatronic charger which was part Trojan horse and part Lady Godiva.
In the campaign shot, Gaga is photographed reclining on a chaise lounge in a sexy, pleated lavender gown, her ironed, peroxide blonde hair a carbon copy of Versace's hairstyle and the house's signature Medusa head around her neck and as a brooch on her dress.
Lady Gaga is also photographed with the house's must-have Signature bag and the new Palazzo tote which debuted at the SS 2014 fashion show.
Versace said the new campaign "shows how Lady Gaga completely captures the Versace essence: creative, experimental, fearless".
The campaign shots portray her as "sophisticated and glamorous" so she can highlight the distinctive traits of Versace - "creativity and the courage to experiment".
The singer is not the only star to appear in a campaign for the Italian fashion house.
Madonna and Jennifer Lopez, among others, have previously starred in the brand's ads.
