Russia says OPCW qualified for Nobel Peace Prize

MOSCOW, Oct. 12 -- Russia welcomes the decision of the Nobel Committee to award the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) with the Peace Prize, the foreign ministry said Saturday.

"The organization is a most effective international structure in disarmament and non-proliferation ... It has been settling most complicated technical and other issues," the ministry said in a statement.

The OPCW, together with the United Nations, has begun to eliminate the chemical weapons in Syria, which testifies to its qualification, it said.

"Russia participated actively in the work on the Convention on banning chemical weapons, as the main objective for all the participating countries is removing from the world the danger of using this anti-human weapon," said the statement.

Previously, a group of Russian politicians said they had sent a letter to the Nobel Committee, nominating President Vladimir Putin as the Peace Prize winner.

Chairman of the State Duma international affairs committee Alexei Pushkov slammed Friday the decision to award the prize to the OPCW.

"They have started giving the Nobel Peace Prize in advance: first to (U.S. President Barack) Obama for fine words, not for actions, now to the OPCW, which has just started working in Syria," the Interfax news agency quoted him as saying.
