KISUMU, Kenya, Sept. 12 -- Kenyan police on Thursday shot dead three armed robbers who had strangled to death a Norwegian national in the lakeside city of Kisumu.
Regional Security Coordinator Francis Mutie said the robbers, among them a policeman, were shot dead after killing Jan Kristiansen, who was the director of Kisumu's Jan Academy.
The 73-year-old foreigner ran children orphanages in Kisumu town. He was also a missionary.
"We are trying to establish the motive of the murder and whether it was an inside job," said Mutie, who was accompanied by top security chiefs.
The regional security coordinator said the robbers strangled the missionary after they failed to get money in the safe in his Milimani Estate home.
The gang had gained entry after the uniformed officer (who was killed) told the security guard they wanted to search the house.
"However, the security guard raised the alarm and Flying Squad officers who were patrolling the town responded and shot dead the three and one escaped," Mutie said.
Mutie said police have launched investigations into the murder. "The robbers had tied his legs using aluminum wire as the thugs strangled him to death despite the old man's plea that he did not have any money," Mutie said.
He said the private security guard then rushed and alerted one of the security firms around who later called the police who shot dead the three robbers on the spot, but one fled on foot.
"One of the shot dead gangsters was a nephew to Jan's wife. We will do everything to arrest the police who is still at large and is believed to be armed with an AK 47 rifle," he vowed.
The incidents come a day after local political leaders have protested against rising insecurity incidents in Kisumu County.
