Egypt's Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy met Thursday with his German counterpart Guido Westerwelle in Cairo on the latest developments of the Egyptian political situation.

Egypt "is looking forward to closer ties with Germany," Fahmy said at a joint press conference after his meeting with Westerwelle.

For his part, the German diplomat said "Germany is concerned about the Egyptian affairs," and is "waiting for Egypt to send a message to the world showing it is walking on the right track."

He also stressed that Germany "has important investments in Egypt" and emphasized the necessity of stability for the economic development.

Westerwelle arrived Wednesday in Cairo for a three-day visit, which is the first paid by a German official after the army ousted President Mohamed Morsi and handed power to head of the Supreme Constitutional Court Adli Mansour.

Westerwelle's visit comes in the framework of the European mediation efforts to bring rival Egyptian political forces to the negotiating table.

Before Westerwelle, EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton was in Egypt to inform the interim leadership about the European understanding of the political division in the turmoil-hit country.

Ashton met deposed Morsi, who has been held incommunicado since his overthrow in early July, but Westerwelle was denied such a meeting by Egyptian authorities, according to state-run Al-Ahram newspaper.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has called for releasing Morsi and resolving the current political crisis through dialogue.
