NEW DELHI, July 8 (Xinhua) -- Six people were killed and around 20 are feared trapped when a hotel collapsed near the southern Indian city of Hyderabad early Monday, police said.
Most of the dead are said to be restaurant workers serving food and tea at that time.
The two-storey building of City Light Hotel on Rashtrapati Road in Secunderabad, the twin city of Hyderabad, collapsed around 06: 30 a.m. local time, said a senior police officer.
Police, fire fighting personnel and rescue workers managed to evacuate 11 people from the rubble and the condition of some of the injured is said to be critical.
Hyderabad Police Commissioner Anurag Sharma told reporters that so far six bodies were recovered while 11 injured were taken out. At least 20 are feared trapped in the debris as many local laborers and rickshaw drivers were having tea at the hotel at the time of the collapse.
The hotel is said to be in a running down condition and the authorities had already asked the owner to demolish it with a court stay.
Building collapse happens frequently in India due to bad construction, running down condition and neglect of security measures.
