Russia expels 11,000 illegal migrants so far this year

MOSCOW, June 6 (Xinhua) -- Nearly 11,000 foreign nationals have been expelled from Russia so far this year, the Federal Migration Service (FMS) said Thursday.

"For five months of 2013, nearly 11,000 foreigners have been deported from Russia," FMS press service said.

The FMS said there were currently about 11 million foreign citizens in Russia but only 1.7 million held valid work or residence permits.

In 2013, more than 42,000 foreigners received Russian passports and 40,000 more were issued permanent residency permits, FMS said.

At the same time, more than 850,000 illegal immigrants had been fined for immigration law violations, it said.

The European Union so far this year has repatriated more than 1,600 Russian citizens wanted by the Russian law enforcement agencies.

Russia has signed 123 re-admission treaties with European, Asian and former Soviet countries.
