SEOUL, April 19 (xinhua) -- The South Korean government plans to establish a maritime police station on an island near disputed islets known as Dokdo in Korean and Takeshima in Japan, local media reported Friday.
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries said they will set up a police station on Ulleung Island in this year, some 90 kilometers west of the disputed islets, a bid to better guard the Dokdo islands.
South Korea has maintained its control of the islets for decades since the end of the 1910-1945 Japanese occupation, the Yonhap news agency said.
South Korea's former president Lee Myung-bak paid a landmark visit to a set of disputed islets claimed by both South Korea and Japan on Aug. 10, 2012, an unprecedented trip that raised Tokyo's ire.
