ROME, April 17 (Xinhua) -- More than 44 percent of Italian pensioners get less than 1000 euros each mounth despite high commodity prices, national statistics institute Istat said on Wednesday.
In 2011, some 7.4 million retirees in the country received monthly pensions under 1,000 euros (1,318 U.S. dollars), including 2.2 million people living with less than 500 euros, according to Istat.
Pensions received by women, standing for 52.9 percent of overall pensioners, were 30.5-percent lower than those of men.
Some 27.8 percent of those who drew retirement benefits in 2011 were under 65 years old, while almost half were between the ages of 65 and 79.
Meanwhile, according to another study released recently by Istat, in 2011 a total of 546,607 births were recorded in the ageing country, about 15,000 fewer than in 2010, confirming the downward trend that began in 2009.
