A baby shark has been artificially hatched at the Malta National Aquarium from an egg collected from a dead shark at a fish market, local media said on Thursday.
The hatching programme was run by Sharklab Malta, a registered NGO and a non-profit voluntary organisation dedicated to research, education and to raise greater awareness about all Elasmobranch -- Sharks, Rays, Skates and Chimaeras -- around Malta and within the Mediterranean, together with the Malta National Aquarium.
Sharklab Malta collects eggs from dead sharks, then sends them to the Malta National Aquarium where they are displayed and cared for in the Shark and Ray egg display tank.
The baby shark will now be monitored and fed until it is strong enough and may be released into the wild.
