Thatched Cottage Stele is built in the year of Gengzi under the reign of Emperor Jiaqing of Ming Dynasty (1540). Standing behind Knee-holding Pavilion and supported by a giant turtle sculpture pedestal, the stele bears two huge characters - Thatched Cottage (Cao Lu in Chinese) - an inscription written by Jiang Hui of Shinan origin on its front side, and five huge characters reading Hidden Place of Crouched Dragon on its back side. Before he mounted to historic stage, Zhuge Liang gained a nickname of Crouched Dragon from his teacher Pang Degong who predicted that Zhuge Liang was a crouched dragon trapped in shallow river, and would fly high into the sky as long as encountering with auspicious clouds. So, the residency of Zhuge Liang is also termed as Hidden Place of Couched Dragon by late generations.
