After the 80s, women became more involved in society, and began to wear western style suits like men. More and more elements of men's fashion were used in the design of women's clothes. It was a signal of female self-awareness.

Ms. Zhou said, "There were only two stores in Beijing that I often visited. One was in Xidan, one in Wangfujing. I bought clothes in these two stores. I also had clothes made. Like this pair of pants, they were made before 1980. At that time, female pants had openings on the side, not in the middle like now."

After all these years of change, aunt Zhou is all to happy to step out in a short sweater, short skirt and boots. This outfit proves that she's just as energetic as the younger generation -- but with many more stories to tell.
